The Year 2 Sleep Over
offers students the opportunity to take responsible risks, within the familiar
setting of school. The students build resilience by experiencing time away from
home and develop a closer bond with peers and significant adults within the
school environment. The students, from year to year, verbalise the
memorable events, and through this feedback these events are now woven into the
fabric of traditions of Wynnum State School.
One of the events is the Raft Race. The construction
of the rafts are part of the students’ Science and Technology within the
Australian Curriculum. In Physical Science students learn about the nature of
forces and motion, and matter and energy within the environment of water.
Whilst in Technology the emphasis is on producing a designed solution for a
specific context. That requires joint decision making regarding ideas,
undertaking design, construction, testing and evaluation. Through this real
life investigative and inquiry process, student learning promotes the Habits of
Mind as they work together in teams to build their rafts. Persistence,
Creating, Imagining and Innovating, Thinking Interdependently, Taking
Responsible Risks and of course Finding Humour are evident. Each year the
culminating raft races are excitingly competitive and achievement driven, as
every raft and team successfully meets the challenge.
