 Wynnum Wahoos

The Amateur Swim Club, Wynnum Wahoos, is operated by the P&C with the assistance of volunteers and supplements the basic swimming program offered by the school.

As a subcommittee the club has a structure, annually electing a Chair, Treasurer and Secretary who meet regularly with club members to ensure effective communication and continuously improve the swimming experience for all.

The Wynnum Wahoos offers a family friendly atmosphere where each child is encouraged to participate and improve their swimming skills, whilst having fun safely together.

Who can join

Swimmers of all ages and abilities from both Wynnum State School and the wider community are welcome, however, children must be accompanied and supervised by an adult at all times. Our Wynnum Wahoos member information (PDF, 189 KB) brochure provides a brief introduction to the club.

To become a member, simply complete the Wynnum Wahoos membership form (PDF, 314 KB) and email to wynnumwahoos@gmail.com.

Additionally, if you are interested in a learn to swim program, stroke correction or squad training for your children, the P&C has engaged Bayside Swim School to meet this need.

When we meet

The club operates from the Memorial Pool at Wynnum State School each Friday night during Terms 1 and 4. Gates open at 6 pm for a 6.15 pm start.

Swimmers nominate for their preferred events (strokes and distances):

• before a club meet using Swimlynx, our online registration software or

• at the club meet before 6.15 pm.

What it costs

Registration

Both individual and family memberships are available for the whole, of part of a, season; payable in advance:

• $50 individual (full season), after 1 January $25.00 (half season)

• $90 family (full season), after 1 January $45.00 (half season)

A gate fee of $2 per club meet is payable on entry and provides funds for the club’s awards and end of season celebration.

Merchandise

The club offers a range of branded items – latex swimming caps, polo shirts and swimming togs for boys, girls, men and women – in addition to standard items (eg. goggles, swimming caps).

How we swim

We offer two categories based on each swimmer’s proficiency:

Little Wahoos

• Perfect for younger siblings or beginner swimmers, a 25m assisted event is offered to our Little Wahoos. Older swimmers accompany the Little Wahoo in their event and when the beginner feels confident to do so, they can progress to the 25m individual events.

Wahoos

• Swimmers take part in timed races over 25m, 50m or longer distances in all strokes – Freestyle, Breaststroke, Backstroke and Butterfly - with the aim of improving their individual times.

• Our focus is on personal achievement and individual improvement.

• Swimmers swim according to their personal best time rather than their age, ensuring swimmers race against others of a similar standard.

• Once a swimmer achieves a qualification time over 25m, they progress to 50m events and, similarly, longer distances.
