In line with the Australian Curriculum, at Wynnum State School, students develop Information and Communication Technology (ICT) capability as they learn to use ICT effectively and appropriately to access, create and communicate information and ideas, solve problems and work collaboratively in all learning areas at school. ICT capability involves students learning to make the most of the digital technologies available to them and adapting to new ways of doing things as technologies evolve.  Raising students’ awareness of the importance of being an informed citizen in cyber safety is an ongoing endeavour.

Students have access to, and interact with, a range of digital resources which support student development of the ICT capabilities.  These resources include computer workstations, laptops, iPads, digital cameras, digital microscopes and Lego and BeeBot robotic resources.  Resources are organized flexibly to support a range of teaching and learning environments, including  home room pods of 4 to 10 workstations and/or laptops and 6 laptop trolleys of 14 - 32 laptops each.

Software includes school purchased programs, software provided with the Department of Education and Training’s Managed Operating System and mobile device applications installed on the iPads.

The following activities provide a snapshot of how Information Communication Technologies are being used to enhance student learning:

• Introduce the concept of coding using Scratch to create an animated digital story which explains and reinforces a habit of mind

• Work with a partner to program a robot to navigate a variety of courses

• Use effective design features to construct an engaging and persuasive website which reflects the students’ understanding of the habits of mind and healthy practices that relate to the Emu Gully Camp

Use File Explorer to create folders and manage files efficiently and securely

Complete homework activities online using the Learning Place, the Department of Education and Training’s secure online environment

•Create a character map of Rowan from the novel Rowan of Rin using the software program Inspiration.

Locate and retrieve images from a shared network drive.  Adhere to appropriate copyright procedures when searching for and saving images from internet sites

Create a multimodal EdStudio webpage within the Learning Place to present learning, discussion and opinions surrounding the novel Rowan of Rin.  Use appropriate ICT tools safely to share and exchange information with a known audience online via the learning Place.

Create a blog on an edStudio page and invite classmates to respond

Record Loving Literature responses as a blog within an edStudio

Students research some of the historical features of Wynnum and publish their findings by designing and creating a brochure using Publisher

Students create a visual retell of a familiar text using the drawing program TuxPaint.  The drawings are imported into PhotoStory, sentences for each drawing are typed and a video is created.  The video is uploaded to each student’s page in a class edStudio.  Parents are able to access this from home.

•Reinforce a concept using an app on an iPad

Work as a team to navigate a BeeBot through an obstacle course

Use the library software Oliver to search the library catalogue and account information
